Turn Off The Lights

star trek facepalm, epic facepalm, best facepalm
Let’s face it, a lot of us face this problem of forgetting to switch off the lights in the haste to leave from home. It could be leaving for office, for an interview, for your classes, for your date or for your outing with your friends but we are always in a rush to leave our homes to go outside. In all this haste, it is criminal to leave your lights switched on at home. Apart from the electricity bill at the end of the month, it isn’t an eco-friendly option either. We can’t be found guilty with such actions when actually we should be doing our bit to save the non-renewable sources of energy.
So, what do we do then? That’s the first question which comes to our minds and Phil Bosua and his team from San Francisco, California, USA might just have the right answer for us. Phil and his team have made LIFX which is the name of their project. LIFX, basically, is a LED light bulb which is Wi-Fi enabled and hence which can be controlled using your iPhone or your Android enabled phone.
In an age of mobile, on-the-move lives, LIFX can be a godsend for many people. It’s very simple to install and use. The whole set-up consists of a light bulb and an app. The user has 3 options of light bulbs to choose depending on the light fixtures. Once installed, switch on the bulb and launch the app which can be downloaded from App Store and Google Play.
The best part about LIFX is that any and every light in the house (provided you install LIFX in the whole house) can be switched on and off, brightness controlled and you can even fall to sleep to gradually dimming lights as well as wake up to gradually brightening lights. In fact, you can even create the colors to match the mood, decor or occasion. So, the next party can be hosted right inside your home. Pretty neat, huh? Once the set-up is complete, you never have to bother about remembering to switch off the lights or running around the house. You can safely step out of the house and not shed a single drop of sweat in connection with the lights of the house.
Initiatives like these not only help the environment but also help you cut a lot of expenses connected with your electricity bill.

  1. Wow! This is an awesome invention! This can be extended to other electrical appliances also. If everyone uses this technology, then there would be no electricity shortage.

  4. That is a good use of wi-fi, but tell me, is wi-fi ok to live around with? There was a big hullaballo with the microwave, "use proper protection" around x-rays etc…Wi-fi has become necessity these days (And thank God, for less snakes of wires) but i sure dont like waves consciously generated around me…

  7. Indeed, Ekta, you've raised a valid point. However, if the house has more bulbs rather than CFLs, then the electric consumption will be higher in case of electric bulbs. Refrigerators are also kept always on, they have a higher voltage than the wifi router, so keeping the wifi on shouldn't cause much sweat.
